To put it simply, link building, also known as back linking or external linking, are HTML hyperlinks that take a user from one part of the web to another. These links are internal, directing the user to another part of your site, or they can be external links to other credible sites or information sources.  But what makes link building so important?

Well, Google loves a site with strong, authoritative back-links.  These backlinks tell the Google algorithms that your site is a trusted, reliable source that other business and websites are willing to cite and associate with. In other words, back linking builds credibility, and the most credible sites rank highest in a Google search.

So with all that in mind, here are a few ways to kick start your link building strategy.

Check out how the best websites build their links

If you don’t know how to do something, then find someone who does.  So take a look at the top-ranking sites on Google (preferably those related to your industry) and explore their internal and external links.. See where they lead to, think about in what ways they’re relevant to the site or business, and try to think about how they create a sense of trust and authority. Do this for a little while, and you’ll soon begin to build up an idea on what sites you should be linking back to your own website.

Get blogging

Google loves new content; it also loves internal links. Blogging is one of the best ways to keep your content fresh and an excellent chance to build up some internal links. Blog posts should focus on meaningful topics that give real value to your audience and customers. For example, if you run a food supplement business, you could write a blog titled 5 of the biggest supplement myths exposed. This provides the reader with lots of useful information and a bit of entertainment. But it also builds up your credibility and allows you to promote your business or area of expertise organically, which encourages customers to invest in your products or services.

Catch your customer by the eyes

Blogs are great for building backlinks, but eye-catching infographics are a growing trend among forward-thinking link builders. Humans are visual creatures. We love charts and graphs that are pleasing to the eye and give us valuable information in ways that are easy to digest.  What’s more, we love sharing these with other people, meaning there’s plenty of opportunities to backlink your infographics. You could hire a graphic designer or build your own infographics with tools like Canva and  Piktochart
