Hey awesome ones You know I have seen so many marvels of Technology and call me
0:08
old-fashioned, but there’s a few things in my life that I don’t think I’m ever
0:13
going to give up. And if you’re going along with this video and you say yeah
0:18
I’m not going to give up that or oh I want to add something just put them in
0:22
the comments below I would love to read them and I’d love you to share them with
0:26
other people as well and this video starts in just a few seconds.
0:39
So let’s get right into this. So my number one thing is talking on the phone.
0:46
I don’t have a landline anymore but I got my cell phone. And I don’t know,
0:52
talking on the phone is something if you call your kids you know right away from
1:00
their tonality what’s going on. Are they happy are they sad and you can just feel it and
1:06
hear it. You can’t really get that from a text or an email and I also really still
1:13
savor my long conversations with my girlfriends. Where you know, yeah
1:19
sometimes we’re home for hours and just chit-chatting and a lot of times I have
1:25
it on speaker or I have it in an earbud so it’s not right up to my ear, but you
1:30
know we’re laughing were crying were sharing stories and it’s the history
1:37
that we have together and all that sort of thing that you just can’t put that in
1:41
an email. And yeah there’s….I just love this and sometimes when I’m talking to
1:48
my girlfriend’s, you know we’ll start talking about missing our mom’s and the
1:52
waterworks start and again it’s a very special share. You know….I kind of feel
2:00
sorry for the younger generation. I rarely ever hear my kids on the phone
2:06
for hours just just talking and I think the art of conversation is getting a
2:12
little bit lost. It’s just seems to me that it’s been
2:17
replaced and I’m just generalizing here, certainly there are exceptions to
2:21
the rules, but a lot of times it’s been replaced by texts and happy face emojis.
2:27
I don’t know, when I call up a friend and I hear that “hello” there’s a magic
2:36
there……my heart just leaps and I know that I’m going to be in for a very
2:41
special conversation and I don’t know, I’m just not giving this one up. I
2:47
think it’s very, very special and what’s number two. Number two is…. I’m not
2:55
giving up keeping real photographs and also real mementos. Ah yeah of course I’m
3:04
putting everything on my cell phone, but it just seems to me when I’m running out
3:09
of space I’m going back and I don’t need that one I don’t need that one in
3:13
deleting them instead of you know saving them taking them to a department store
3:18
or a camera shop and getting an actual photograph for it.
3:24
The other thing that the mementos part, is I still say if it’s a real special
3:30
Mother’s Day or something along those lines I save them and I just sort of
3:38
show you I’ll show you a little booklet that I did for well, I did it for my kids
3:44
when they were 16 years old. And Shannon allowed me to show hers here. So maybe
3:49
Bill can do some close-ups here and hopefully with the lights you can still
3:52
see them, but this one says, ‘I wonder what my life will be like until I’m 16’ and
4:01
what I did was I just saved and you know it might be too late for you to
4:07
save a lot of these sort of things, but maybe you could share this video with
4:12
your daughter or your son and maybe it’s something they might want to keep or
4:17
maybe you want to keep it for your grandchildren, but I just kept everything
4:21
you know that I even the little band you know the little band that she had on her
4:26
wrist and just some of her pictures. She didn’t know I was doing this
4:32
well I did it for more than one child but and just sort of some of the
4:37
pictures that were there some of the quotes when she was a kid. I actually
4:41
kept a diary of some of the quotes so let’s just take a look at this one.
4:45
Shannon age 3. Today at dinnertime I asked Shannon to say grace and went
4:50
like this: Dear God thank you for chuck-e-cheese thank you for
4:53
chuck-e-cheese thank you cheese amen. Well what can you say for that one. Let’s
5:00
just do one more here. Shannon age four. Shannon
5:04
is crazy about horses. Today we went to the fair. We watched the show horses and
5:11
acquired about riding lessons. Then one of the owners allowed
5:17
Shannon to ride a white horse, Polar. When Shannon came home she asked what do we
5:24
do first, build the barn or buy the pony. You know
5:30
typical quotes that I would write down. Birth, oh there she is with a little,
5:34
actually that’s a donkey, but just anything that happens with them. I’ll
5:40
just oh and then a lot of the homemade Valentine’s cards or Mother’s Day cards.
5:46
I just I’ll just read this one for you: ‘late at night it’s time for bed only I
5:50
wake up and shake head, my Valentine for me to you, every minute I love you too from
5:58
Shannon to mom. So again I think I wrote in this one, sometimes your pictures are
6:04
scary Shannon, but you know it just means a lot and and it just goes on and on and
6:11
on about of course some pictures of her as she was growing up and then at the
6:15
very end it’s oh that’s what my life will be like until I’m 16. And I asked
6:25
Shannon to share that with me for this video and she said, mom that was one of
6:31
my greatest gifts. So no not giving up the mementos and not giving up the
6:38
photographs and again I’ve got….a I’ve got a few photographs I kind of do them
6:43
in a scrapbooking kind of thing, but you know we’ve got them going on here and I
6:49
just think that they’re a wonderful thing to sit back and go through and
6:53
let’s face it, scrolling through our phone it’s not always happening. So am I
6:59
inspiring you to think of things that you just don’t want to give up? Don’t
7:04
forget you know, just put them down in the comments there and oh by the way
7:08
while you’re looking around down there there is a subscribe
7:12
button and a bell and yeah click on those and join us on our videos and a
7:20
big welcome. So number three believe it or not…..it’s my TV.
7:29
What? Okay Heather, yeah, yeah you’re okay with the first two, but now you lost me.
7:34
Hear me out on this just a little bit. Um I find….I know….first of all
7:40
I know my kids have told me, mom you can stream sports, you can stream news, you
7:48
can stream all kinds of things. Yeah okay alright I can also watch things on the
7:54
internet and all that sort of jazz, but what I like about TV is I might be in
8:01
one of those states which you know happens at least once in a while for me,
8:05
where I just want to be entertained and I don’t really know what I want to watch.
8:12
It’s really a lot different than you know being on the internet because on
8:17
the internet they’re kind of following your patterns a little bit and they’re
8:22
making suggestions of what you want to watch and I’ll give you a few examples
8:27
of what I’m talking about. So with this little gizmo I’m….by the way
8:34
I’m a guide person not a surfer ,but I usually just sort of go through the
8:38
guide and it’s amazing, like sometimes I might see an old 1940’s black-and-white
8:45
movie and go oh I’m going to watch that or maybe it’s a documentary on some hidden
8:51
or stolen Van Gogh painting that they got back and it’s oh I want to watch
8:56
that or…or…or but comeback stories you know it might be a news kind of thing
9:04
but the comeback stories, the…the trials and the tribulations and how people come
9:10
back and then a lot of times they come back and give back to the society. I mean
9:14
they’re just they’re so beautiful and I think what I like about the TV is the
9:20
fact that it’s really a mystery. You know you’re
9:24
going through this and you’re going, gotta follow some people who are finding
9:29
a beachfront home that sounds interesting. I may never do it in my life
9:32
so you know just watch that and it’s…it’s a mystery instead of something
9:38
being programmed to what my likes are. I can find things that I never even knew
9:44
existed that I find that I do like and you know like I said it it’s it’s helped
9:50
me to be very very interested in art now and also maybe I’m gonna go swimming
9:57
with the dolphins one day because of this baby. Number four is my music. Yeah
10:05
all right so it’s all on a mp3 player or an iPod. I don’t know Bill can you take
10:12
a close-up of this and sort of show some of our playlists that we have. We
10:16
have a bunch of them, but Tara’s music there is some of today’s music and I
10:22
absolutely love you know some of them. We’ve got storyteller, 70s music, 80s
10:27
music, 90’s, 2000 that sort of thing, but I’m keeping this music on this. Yes I
10:34
know, I know, I know you can stream music now
10:38
mom. Well okay let’s do a little back history here. First of all I had records
10:44
and I had my favorite music, but yeah okay the records kind of skipped and
10:49
scratched, I get that one. So then we went into eight tracks….follow along with me,
10:54
let me know in the comments if you remember all of this. So we went into the
10:58
eight tracks and okay after a while when you played them they were going rrrrrr
11:03
rrrrrrr and it didn’t really sound like the original music at all. So I get that, so
11:09
then we had to dump all those and we had to get the same music we’re talking the
11:13
same music now on cassettes and we had to get the cassette player too. So and
11:19
all of these had to go into cars yadda yadda yadda, so anyway so we’ve got the
11:24
cassettes. This Is It this is fantastic. No they changed them all to CDs.
11:31
Then you thought to yourself well they still kind of go rrrrrrrr after a
11:34
while. So I’m cool with that, but all the CDs at one point…. Bill and I, hey Bill
11:40
didn’t we have like, we had literally hundreds of CDs. Literally….literally and
11:45
and so then we were supposed to change over to this baby and Bill literally
11:53
spent days doing the playlist putting on the music and it sounded good.
12:00
Sometimes we want to have a breakfast and we want to play the coffee time kind
12:06
of music. Compilations that he put together kind of like mix tapes. Other
12:10
times we have dinner music and we’re sort of listening to maybe new jazz
12:16
maybe old jazz there’s all kind of…… and of course the 70s and the 80s and rocking it
12:20
out to some of those, but streaming music now and tossing all of this out? In the
12:28
famous words if you remember the movie of Network: I’m mad as heck….not the real
12:35
word they used…..and I’m not gonna take it anymore. I am NOT giving up this
12:42
gadget. I love it. It works in my car and as long as I can I’m going to keep it
12:47
and a couple of other things, so I can also add songs to this as I told you. I
12:53
loved a lot of the top 20 hits that are out these days and so I think they’re
12:59
about a dollar I can just add them to this little gizmo and again I can play
13:04
this in my car, in the backyard, in my home, whatever and there’s another
13:09
interesting thing that I found every time I watch you know those late-night
13:15
talk shows they’re showing the records. I mean oh and he’s got a new record out
13:21
and I’m like what, we’re going in a circle folks. Everything old is new again.
13:30
I’m sticking to this baby. So number five…. last but not least is the potluck
13:37
dinners. No not that kind of potluck. I’m talking about the potluck dinner
13:44
get-togethers and we actually did a video on this. I’ll put it up there the
13:48
link for it so you can take a look at it. The art of that kind of get-together it
13:54
just really seems to be lost and I just don’t know what it is. Is it because do
14:01
you look kind of cheap if you have a potluck dinner or is it just too
14:05
old-fashioned? It seems to me that these days if you want to get together with 40
14:11
of your favorite friends you almost have to rent a hall and cater to it or have
14:17
one of your kids get married or something along that. I just say no
14:20
you know when we have our get-togethers our potluck get-togethers it’s amazing
14:27
we’ll have like 40 or 50 people over to the home they will bring many of the
14:33
times a meal, probably maybe one of their favorite and most special dinners or
14:40
meals that they make or maybe they’ll bring something from their country of
14:45
origin that I’ve never tasted before. Some of the time I’m just blown away by
14:49
how spicy it is, but it’s just a wonderful banquet of enjoying in life.
14:56
And you know I just I think, what’s happening a lot of the times now is
15:01
somebody will say well let’s go meet in a restaurant. That’s fine you know, you
15:05
have a nice one-on-one, but the problem with that is sometimes for some people
15:11
it’s like you know super fancy super expensive, you’re sharing half the bill
15:16
and maybe it’s $300 for your half of it and man I can put a potluck dinner on it
15:23
for $300 easily. With and most people for a potluck they bring their choice of
15:29
what kind of beverage they want and that sort of thing, so I really think it’s
15:33
lost. I’d love to see it come back with people. I just think we all have to kind
15:38
of ease up on this whole you know kind of look at me type of
15:43
thing and just share our times together. You know time is short. I’ve said it so
15:48
many times. There’s only so many summers left for us and certainly doing
15:54
the one-on-one restaurant thing is just not going to make it as far as our
15:59
futures. There’s so many special people out there, let’s get them all together
16:03
have that potluck dinner and enjoy. It’s party time.
16:09
So something else that I’m not giving up is the cuteness factor.
16:15
Hey Hurricane. How are you little Hurricane? Our little cuteness factor.
16:20
He always yawns. I think he’s just been waiting for his turn to get on camera,
16:24
but yeah and we want to just say a great big thank you to all of you that are
16:30
subscribing and ringing that bell after you subscribe so that you get
16:35
notifications. We’re doing videos now on Friday on beauty and fashion and of
16:41
course Tuesdays are…..okay are you okay? All right so Tuesdays are inspirational….
16:52
I guess you didn’t want me to forget that sometimes they’re about you right,
16:55
about the little do,g food, travel, exercise all that sort of thing. So we
17:02
do those on Tuesdays and when you ring the bell you are notified when they
17:06
show up. So oh and also by the way I started up an Insta gram page, just look
17:12
up awesome over 50 and that way you can sort of get your daily awesomeness at
17:19
least we’re trying with photos and little videos and that every single day
17:23
on Instagram. So I guess until next time I first of all I’d love to hear those
17:29
comments okay, so let me know I want to be reminded of things that I shouldn’t
17:33
let go of and maybe your thoughts too on the art of conversation or some of those
17:39
types of things so things that we maybe are losing and in the meantime keep it
17:46
awesome, be your wonderful incredible selves and we’ll see you later.
17:55
Do you notice how he always looks at the camera when I say that. He’s becoming a
18:01
real video dog. Everyone’s invited to subscribe and join us on our videos.
